We, members of Hmong Entrepreneur Lending Purse (HELP), are very excited to be partnering with Hmong Nationalities Organization (HNO) to put together a 2-day Declaration of Global Hmong New Year Day Celebration at the Intercontinental Hotel in the beautiful Riverfront, Downtown Saint Paul on Friday, December 15th and Saturday, December 16th. HELP will lead the Friday event and HNO will take over the Saturday event. Just like how our community members of Mexican descent celebrate Cinco De Mayo in May, we believe that members of our community who are of Hmong descent should have a solidified and declared New Year day as well.
As many of you know, our parents and grandparents emigrated to this country over 40 years ago as political refugees from Laos as a result of the Vietnam War where we were heavily involved in the so-called “Secret War” and lost many of our loved ones. In the new country, our parents and grandparents have held onto our traditional values and cultural practices, which are key fundamentals in creating a progressive future for our community. However, since the Hmong exodus from Laos, we have celebrated our “Hmong New Year” several times throughout the year and we don’t have a specific, declared day for our New Year’s Day celebration. This has created much confusion for us young people, who are blessed to carry on the tradition.
We are grateful to HNO, who over the past 3 years, has taken the initiative to spearhead a New Year’s Day for Hmong people across the globe. After extensive research, local and international Hmong communities convened in St. Paul this past March and declared the 3rd Friday of every December as the Hmong New Year Day to be celebrated globally going forward. Our ultimate goal is to have our local and national government declare the 3rd Friday of December as the legal Hmong New Year. We still have a long way to reach our goal. A Chinese proverb says “a journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step.” We must boldly take the “first step” this upcoming Friday, December 15th. We have planned an exciting evening for you. We look forward to your support. Come celebrate this historical event with your friends, family, co-workers and peers! Let’s start the new year with a BANG on Friday! And yes, don’t forget HNO’s ceremony and traditional event on Saturday!
