Perspectives: A Series, with Wing Young Huie

Wednesday, September 7, 2016 - 1:00pm to 3:30pm

We Are The Other: photography workshop with Wing Young Huie

What are the ethical, aesthetic, and cultural challenges of photographing thousands of strangers? Wing’s artistic process has constantly evolved, from street photography to employing an array of conceptual interactions in a continual effort to close the gap between the photographer, the viewer, and what is viewed. Who indeed decides the meanings of a photograph?

Good photographs are like life, loaded with suggestion yet open to interpretation. But how much of what we see is shaped by our daily interactions and how much is shaped by the countless pop culture images we’ve consumed? How we look at photographs shows us how we look at life. What do you see?

These questions and more will be addressed as Wing will show photos from his many projects, demonstrate his expanding photographic toolkit, and facilitate a group discussion that will complicate and challenge initial perceptions, opening up multiple perspectives. Participants will then go onto to the street and photographically engage others.

Background on Perspectives: A Series As part of the 8 80 Vitality Fellowship, Margaret Jones is arranging learning opportunities to discover and discuss diverse perspectives with City staff and community partners on how to advance our efforts to build the most livable city in America.
